How My Family Beats Croup

Noooo! It’s almost that time of year again... The time when most of us moms & dads get that middle of the night wake up call/barking cough from a little one crying & struggling to breathe. It’s so scary & is something that my kids have had the poor luck of experiencing regularly during the winter months for most of their lives. Because I’ve spent the last 9 years helping my kids through this, I’ve gotten the opportunity to try & fail, as well as try & succeed. The methods I’m sharing here are things that have worked for my own family, as well as others in my community of friends and family. They’re definitely worth a try if you find your little ones having a hard time this winter and would like to try some natural options.

Gear up for the winter months BEFORE the winter months.

Boost the immune system. This of course, starts with whole, rounded nutrition. For awhile the only way my kids would eat fruits & veggies was in smoothies. Find what works & get them filled up on the good stuff. My #1 NON-SECRET WEAPON... is Thieves Essential Oil.

Throughout the year we use a few drops of Thieves, a few times a week. (For the little one, we do a couple of drops on the bottoms of the feet & for us adults as well as my 9 year old, we take up to 4 drops in a veggie capsule) But once school starts & the colder weather kicks in, we up that to almost daily. Our other immune supportive weapon is Ningxia Red, Young Living's delicious antioxidant juice. It's hard to stick to just 1 shot a day when it tastes so good. I can barely keep my kids from stealing it from the fridge!

Have a humidifier on hand. Living in Arizona most of my life, this was a necessity almost year round, but here in Nashville I really didn't think we'd need it. Guess what, you do. Keeping those airways moistened & breathing comfortable is vital to beat croup & all the other lame winter icks that pop up. The Crane Elephant Ultrasonic Humidifier is our favorite. The coverage is awesome, It has a flow adjuster & is super easy to clean & fill.

Keep breathing support oils at the ready. The must have breathing oils in this household are without question, Thieves, Eucalyptus, Cypress, RC, Ravintsara & Frankincense. We've got some other favorites too but any combination of these is usually going to be a winner. Not all oils are created equal though, I've tried 13 oil companies over the last 8 years & have a clear favorite where I've found consistency, potency & quality. Oils you'll find in the grocery store for a few dollars are not going to have the same compounds or effectiveness as pure, organic oils from real plants and with no fillers or synthetics. What you use really matters. Get in touch if you'd like to learn more about the oils I've chosen for my family. EMAIL ME

Try the wet heat/dry cold method

This one I learned from an angel night call nurse through my insurance. It goes like this:

Wet heat: Take your little one into the bathroom and shut the door. You're going to create a steam room for them. Turn on the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom with them on the floor or toilet. Have them take slow deep breaths in and out for about 10-15 minutes. I take this up a notch by closing the drain and putting in a few drops of breathing oils into the bottom of the shower so that the steam room I’ve created also promotes open airways thanks to the properties of the oils. (*Obviously be careful to not burn yourself or your child with the hot water, and do not get in the shower, or put them in it.)

Dry Cold: Now wrap your little one in a blanket so they’re fully covered & warm (not their face of course). Take them outside into the cold night air, or to the open freezer if outside isn't an option, and have them breathe in and out deeply and slowly again for about 5 minutes.

Once their breathing has returned to normal we get the humidifier going in their room, as

well as the diffuser with the breathing oils & put them back to bed.

DIY CHEST RUB

After using the methods above, we use lots of our favorite breathing oils in the diffuser, and our trusted DIY chest rub 1-2 times per day for about a week, giving them all the support they need.

Ingredients: Any of all of the following oils

Eucalyptus Globulous Thieves

Cypress Ravintsara

RC Frankincense

Peppermint Copaiba

Palo Santo

For 1 cup of coconut oil as our base, we use 10-20 drops each, of Eucalyptus, Cypress, RC & Ravintsara. As well as 5 drops of Thieves, Frankincense, Copaiba & even some Lemon. We store this in a small 4 oz mason jar & keep it in our fridge door. It feels great & has an awesome aromatic effect when used on the chest & bottoms of the feet.
