DISCLOSURE STATEMENT

This post is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure diseases. The information contained is for educational purposes only. I am a Young Living Independent Distributor therefore I am compensated from product sales and enrollments. Personally, I wholly and passionately only reccomend using Young Living Products for essential oils, home and body products. Other than Young Living, I have no afflilation and do not profit in any way from the companies, ingredients or products listed.

TODAY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT GREENING UP YOUR BATHROOM PRODUCTS!

When was the last time you looked through your cabinets in the bathroom and read the ingredients on the items you put on your body each day? What about at the store? Do you turn those shiny bottles around and check out what's in them before throwing them in your cart?

Yeeeeaaaahhhh :) Don't feel bad. I didn't used to either. It was really hard to believe that the FDA and other reulatory agencies, or companies themselves could possibly intentionally put harmful ingredients like hormone inhibitors or carcinogens, or known cancer causing chemicals into our home and body products, but you know what.... they do.

Do me a favor. Stop what you're doing...... Yes stop reading this post and pull out your smart phone. Download an app called THINK DIRTY. Now come back and finish reading! :) Here's a link if you're on your phone already: http://www.thinkdirtyapp.com

Later today, go through your cabinets in your bathroom and kitchen. Scan a few and see where they rate on the scale of Safe to Dirty(Scary). I think you'll be really surprised with what you find. After seeing what the products I washed my babies with, slathered on their skin before swimming, and cleaned and freshened my home with, I was angry. Angry that these companies would do this, and angry that I didn't research before buying. And a good majority of the offending items I bought touted "Natural" or "Organic" etc on the labels. Ooooo it gets me mad all over again! There's nothing stopping them and these products are made so easily available that most people don't realize there's even a danger. A lot of us don't know where to start or if spending extra time and money on safer products makes sense for us.. So here's the thing, it's a lot to sort out, it's lame that it's all not readily available to us, but since the government and the stores aren't doing anything about it, let's start remedying it for ourselves!

Over the coming weeks I'll go over lots of home and body products, and ways to make the shift to safer and more effective options. Today we're going to look at......

DEODORANT.

We ALL need it. We all can get a little smelly sometimes, but we ALL need to think and research before putting just anything on such an incredibly sensitive and important area of our bodies and our children's bodies.

If you like research, check out this web link on Deodorant and its effect on breast tissue:

The jist is that, while the idea that Deodorants can cause or contribute to breast cancer is hotly debated and there have been tests evidencing both sides of the coin, the bottom line is that the ingredients in most of them are all around, individually and collectively... TERRIBLE. Most of these ingredients accumulate in our tissues and some never detox out, some take years. Think about how many years have passed as you put this on those armpits every single day. Most of us start using Deodorant in our teens. So NOW is the time to find better options. Let's briefly sort out the top offending ingredients to stay away from and then I've got some great, safe, effective and COST effective options for making a switch.

1. Parabens

(methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl)

Parabens are a SUPER common no-no ingredient that are found in every day beauty and hygiene products and defintiely, your deodorant. Thank God for the companies getting their act together, the ones that have show “paraben free” labels, look for those. Why do Parabens get a bad rap? Studies show parabens have been linked to breast cancer. They're shown to disturb the body’s hormonal balance and they mimic estrogen, Estrogen overproductions play a large part in the formation of breast cancer.

2. Aluminum compounds

(Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly)

Aluminum compounds in deodorants create a chemical reation producing a physical plug within the sweat ducts and temporarily stop the flow of sweat. Unfortunately, these compounds can be absorbed and reatained by your skin. The affects of these compunds are the same as Parabens. Estrogen mimicing compounds and can contribute to the formation of breast cancer cells.

3. Triclosan

Triclosan is a skin irritant and a cause of contact dermatitis. The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide, while the IARC has it listed as a possible carcinogen! Also, Your body contains good as well as bad bacteria, but triclosan kills both.

(Source: http://organics.org/7-harmful-ingredients-in-your-deodorant/)

Those are only 3 ingredients of the multitude of harmful ones in your deodorant. For time purposes I'm listing only these, but you should consider visiting the source link above or just google the ingredients in your own deodorant to see what you find.

READY FOR THE GOOD NEWS?

THERE ARE LOTS OF TRULY NON-TOXIC, EFFECTIVE OPTIONS OUT THERE!

I'm going to start with a DIY since I know lot's of my friends and fam are into that sort of thing. I like to recommend making your own since you get to source the ingredients and you know what's in your end product. But if you're like... "Um no just tell me where to buy it." lol.... Head down to the next section. I'm not judging!

DEODORANT DIY FOR HAPPY ARMPITS

DIY brought to you by the dreamy, natural living PRO, Tara Bruce!

(She'll be launching her own blog to give you tons of amazing organic and green living DIY's and recommendations soon, so check back or email me if you want to be notified when it launches!)

Ingredients:

*3T coconut oil

*3T Shea butter

*2-3T arrowroot

*2-3T baking soda

*Old Deodorant dispenser, thoroughly cleaned.

*Add essential oils of your liking-

Tara uses Tea Tree, Frankinsence and one called Blossoms. Tee Tree specifically is wonderful to help with razor burn and to help prevent fungal infections. Frankincense is also reparative and protecting for the skin. Additionally, using Frankincense topically near those lymphnodes in particular means you'll be getting it into many of the body systems each day inlcuding the tissues previously contaminated with typical deodorant ingredients. This is a huge benefit since Frankincense is well-known as a healing oil and can help with a vast array of health and emotional concerns. Getting a daily dose of this oil is a GREAT thing!

Get these oils and more in Young Living's starter kits shown in the image, email me to get your order placed by clicking HERE.

Directions:

Melt the coconut oil and Shea butter together in a mason jar until it is just melted. Add the essential oils in. Next, add the arrowroot and baking soda until it is dissolved. Then let it cool down in the fridge until it's cool enough that you can transfer it to an old deodorant dispenser. You want to transfer it before it's completely cool and hardened. Or you can just keep it in the mason jar and use your fingers or a spoon to apply it. ENJOY!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOPE, I'M BUSY AND I WANT TO BUY DEODORANT! WHAT SHOULD I TRY?

I got you, friends! Check out the recommendations below and try one that sounds good to you. I try a new one almost every time because I want to see what's out there. Also, Think Dirty is not the Bible of toxic and non-toxic items but it REALLY helps. As a rule of thumb, choose Deodorants (and all products) with as few ingredients as possible, unless you can pronounce them all and know they're natural. Also, you WILL find that these cost $1-4 more than some name brands. If you haven't picked up on the running theme yet, that's because it's cheaper and easier for them to source synthetics, chemicals and preservatives than it is to produce a safe product. Find the dollars in your budget to live cleaner!

(I've listed some items on Think Dirty's 1-5 Scale List Only, there are LOTS of other great natural brands out there too!)

1. Tom's of Maine, most deodorants in this line are in the 0-3 range on Think Dirty, still scan and read for yourself before buying as some scents or titles do rate higher.

2. Naturally Fresh, Crystal Roll-on or stick, find online = 1 on Think Dirty

3. Primal Pit Paste, Thyme & Lemongrass Natural Deodorant, find online = 1 on Think Dirty

4. Schmidt's Natural Deodorant, Lavender + Sage, find online = 1 on Think Dirty

5. Schmidt's Natural Deodorant, Bergamot + Lime, find online = 3 on Think Dirty

6. Products of the Earth 100% Natural Aloe & Coconut Oil Deodorant, find online = 3 on Think Dirty

7. Lafes Deodorant Stick, All Natural No Propylene Glycol, Fresh, find online = 2 On Think Dirty

There's my list and should help to get you started on your way to natural living! If YOU'VE got some natural favorites, please share the knowledge and post below!

xo,

Jenna
