Natural Burn Care

So Thursday, last week, was quite an eventful day. After running errands with Nehemiah and picking Nevaeh up from school, I noticed my tire was super low. We went to fill it up and $3 later.. no improvement and a 2nd tire was now very low too. I decided to rush over to a random tire shop by our house and was able to get all 4 tires for a great deal right then and there. They've been needing it for awhile but we were not wanting to spend. It was clear now, that wasn't an option anymore. So both kids and I went into the office area and sat down. This was a pretty jenky old tire shop and the office was REEEEEEEAL scary and also happened to have a giant metal space heater right in the center of the room. Even after a serious one on one chat with my son about not touching it, the moment the gentleman came into the office to show us the tire issue, you know my son went straight to that heater and put his tiny finger right on that thing! UGH! It was awful. You could tell right away that it was going to be really bad (Second degree without a doubt). He was having waves of pain (the nerves spasming) and a blister was already forming. I immediately regretted not bringing my Young Living oils case with me in my bag that day but remembered I had Lavender and Peppermint sample packets! I ran his finger under cold water for a few minutes trying to bring the temperature back to normal and then I put 1 drop of Lavender and 1 drop of Peppermint on it every few minutes. My poor guy was screaming and bawling non-stop through this process UNTIL the oil. Within 10-30 seconds of the oils touching his finger, he would begin to settle down and lay his head on my chest. As he started to cry again I would add more, and INSTANTLY he would calm down. I did this for 30min. Even after all of that my packets weren't empty yet! It goes so far! So once we were home I got to get into my Burn Care protocol which I'll be sharing below. I hope you'll find this helpful and can try this out next time you or someone you know encounter a burn. (This works for minor burns too! Including sunburn!) I will now NEVER leave home without Lavender and Peppermint in my emergency kit in my purse. Yes I have one. I have a wild toddler! I have to be prepared for everything. :)

My Poor little guy, post-burn and post oils. Finally calming down and not in pain, but very unhappy with himself. Actually more unhappy at the "bad heatuhh" as he called it. It was obviously the heaters fault.

Let's Do This

This DIY is for minor burns. If you feel you may have a serious or 3rd Degree burn, seek medical attention immediately. You may use this recipe without Gauze and Tape. I utilize gauze and tape with this, due to my sons age and the need to keep the area protected and clean. I am not a medical professional, this information is solely based on tried and tested methods used in my own home and passed down through my family. This DIY is ONLY intended to be used with Young Living Essential Oils as their level of purity is Seed To Seal Guaranteed.

Step 1

After cooling down burn area with cool water or ice pack (with barrier, never apply ice directly to a burn), I apply 1-2 Drops of each oil to the burn site repeatedly as it dries in. This will calm, soothe and further cool the burn. This combo, alongside Aloe, makes an amazing healing combination because as the lavender is up against your skin desensitizing your nerves, relieving the pain, healing and preventing scarring, the Peppermint is cooling and numbing and later in the recipe, the Aloe will be repairing, cooling and pushing the Lavender into the skin. Skip or don't use Peppermint near the eyes if using for a facial sunburn. Because it's minty, it will cause some eye watering and discomfort.

Step 2

We keep an aloe plant growing in our bathroom and/or on our entertainment center. They are nearly ZERO maintenance. You wont even know they're there and they are so simple and beautiful, not to mention the tons of herbal, medicinal and beauty benefits this little dude supplies! Get one! Mine is from a local market, cost me less than $10.

Since you now HAVE AN ALOE VERA PLANT. :) You're going to cut off one of the leaves. The outermost leaves are the best to use. These are the oldest and largest, containing a thick, nutrient-rich gel layer. Aloe vera gel contains chemicals that relieve pain and inflammation, as well as encourage skin repair and growth. So this ingredient is KEY. Rinse the leaf in the sink, in as cold water as you can.

Step 3

Gently slice off the blades along the sides of the aloe leaf. The inside of the leaf is very delicate and slicing too deep will cut away valuable chunks of the "good stuff". So take care to go slow and not cut in too deeply.

Step 4

Now you'll thinnnnnnly slice off the skin along the topside of the leaf, exposing one entire side of the inner gel. (You're skinning the leaf. When finished, you'll have exposed the gel of the leaf, and there will only be skin on the underside since that will not be cut.) Then chop the leaf down to the size you need to cover the burn. (If a burn is too large, no need to chop down the leaf, just snip the sharp tip off and skip to the next step or the end. Use multiple leaves from the bottom of the plant if needed). Put any remaining Aloe leaf pieces in a Ziplock to use for the next re-bandaging.

Step 5

Now in most cases, you'll want to get some gauze and medical tape. We were out of our small gauze pads so I had to cut down this gauze to fit his tiny finger. You're going to cut a piece of tape just slightly longer than what you'll need to cover or wrap the area. Lay it down, sticky side up. Next, lay the cut-to-size guaze down on the center of the length of the tape. Next, lay the aloe leaf skin side down (gel side up), onto your gauze, Last, add 2-4 drops of Lavender onto the Aloe gel side. So: bottom layer is tape sticky side up, middle layer is gauze, the top layer that will touch the burn is the gel side of the aloe leaf with Lavender on it.

Step 6

Now softly lay this bandage with gel side, onto the burn, and secure the tape. Next, you'll use as much tape as you feel is neccesary to secure the bandage and close it off from the elements. With Nehemiah's injury being on a finger, we did the first tape wrap around the finger horizontally, then one vertically from outter wrist, over the tip of the finger, down the palm and to the inner wrist. Then another 3-4 pieces of tape horizontally to secure that big one. It was now sealed top to bottom to allow the oils and aloe to do their work with no disruption or contamination since hes a toddler and will obviously touch everything.

I wasn't going to make him take a picture but you can see the entire tip of his finger is covered up in guaze and tape. He was over it and wouldn't let me do one final layer around the base of his finger but it was okay since the aloe leaf area was safe and secure.

FURTHER DIRECTIONS:

Re-apply this treatment fresh once per day or twice if possible. We did this once per day for 4 days and were so happy with his healing. If the burn area is too large (such as a sunburn) Feel free to apply lavender (no peppermint near eyes) and gently rub the gel side of the aloe leaf right onto your burn as often as you want until it's healed.

I hope none of you have to use this remedy since that means you or someone you know will be in pain. But if you do, I'm happy to help you ease their discomfort and get them healing!
